A Simple Screening that Matters
Spring is a time of renewal in Gig Harbor. As winter finally loosens its grip on our beautiful city, spring blooms and days grow longer. It is a time to reassess and get back on track with our health.
April is also Oral Cancer Awareness Month. It is an important reminder to stay on top of one of the most important and commonly overlooked aspects of your dental visit: your oral cancer screening.
Yearly Screenings
Oral cancer develops without pain in its early stages. Many people do not even notice signs of oral cancer until too late. A yearly screening for oral cancer allows us to:
- Detect changes in soft tissues of the mouth, tongue, and throat
- Detect abnormalities before they become serious
- Monitor changes over time for peace of mind
The survival rate for oral cancer increases significantly if caught early. Early detection means easier and more effective treatment.

Who Should be Mindful of Oral Cancer?
Everyone should be screened for oral cancer. However, there are those who should be especially mindful. You should be especially vigilant with yearly screenings if:
- You are over 50 years of age
- You have a history of tobacco and/or alcohol use
- You have excessive sun exposure
- You have a history of HPV
Your oral cancer screening takes just a few minutes and is completed during your regular visit. We will examine your lips, cheeks, tongue, gums, and the roof and floor of your mouth, then check your jaw and neck for any irregularities. The process is quick, comfortable, and requires no preparation or downtime.
Changes can be difficult to detect on your own. However, during a dental exam, these changes become very evident.
